Course Description

The course introduces students to the foundational concepts of computer science and challenges them to explore how computing and technology can impact the world, with an emphasis on real world applications, critical thinking, ethics and the tie into spirituality in a digital world. Students are prepared to know how to use Word, Excel and PowerPoint for school and work. Among other things, they learn how the internet physically works, and touch on various careers in Computer Science such as hardware support, programming and Web Development. They leave with life skills such as Internet Research abilities, a WordPress website and a prepared Resume.

As with all homeschool classes, teachers are, technically, tutors. It is up to the parent to make sure the student stays on track.
There will be five days per week of assignments as well as tests.

Course Requirement

There will be a liability release form, student and parent guidelines and a 3 strikes-out policy for behavior issues, including excessive talking. We are all in this together and we desire to create a learning environment that is conducive to learning and fair to all. Clear boundaries will be set and communicated. It is a High School only class because we will be talking real world ethics situations.

Key concepts covered include:

  • Units 1 – 5 cover the Computer Science Principles Course from Code.org
  • Unit 1 – The Internet
  • Unit 2 – Digital Information
  • Unit 3 – Intro to Programming
  • Unit 4 – Big Data and Privacy
  • Unit 5 – Various careers in Computer Science, such as hardware support, programming and Web Development
  • Unit 6 – Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Unit 7 – Intro to Website Creation through WordPress – may be moved to it’s own Course
